| Proposed Budget Won't Help HUSKY Kids |

A proposed Appropriations Committee budget,
scheduled for an approval vote
tomorrow will not raise HUSKY dental
reimbursement rates enough to actually help
poor children get the oral health care they
desparately need.
According to a story in last nights
Journal-Inquirer newspaper (see link
below), HUSKY dental rates will only be
raised 50% over the current 14 year-old
amounts. These proposed rates are so far
below current market rates, that dentists
will continue to loose so much money and they
will be unable to afford to see HUSKY patients.
Nine other states (Alabama, Delaware,
Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, North
Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee) have
successfully raised dental rates to near or
just below the market rate and seen
significant increases in providers who will
take Medicaid children.
Fourteen years ago a dozen eggs sold for $.89
and now they cost about $2.50. Gas was $1.11
per gallon and now ... well you know about
that. Overall annual health care costs have gone
from about $3,200 per person nationally to
over $14,000.
Without rates that are at least close to the
market, HUSKY kids will continue to lack
access to oral health care. How long will we
wait before a tragic death of a child occurs
because of dental infection, as happened last
month in Maryland and Mississippi?
